I seem to have lost interest for some unknown reason. Do I have too many quilts languishing in the closet? Too many scraps to cull through to find something I really want to work with? Lots of patterns waiting to be made, but not the right one? I can't really say why I have put down my needle and thread.<br />
<br />
I recently went to Quilt Camp which is our guild's name for its retreat. Quilt Camp is held 2X per year at a resort in a little town about 20 - 25 miles from my house. It is really a golf resort, but this time of year in Wisconsin, there's not much golf happening. So the quilters take over. I was a little leery of going since I really had no projects to work on, but I signed up in April for this event and I wasn't going to miss it. Everyone can work on their own quilts or work on quilts that the guild is donating. This time we were working on Service Quilts which are gifted to returning soldiers.<br />
<br />
So I dug thru my RWB strips and came ready to sew. We made lots of 10 1/2" blocks to put into quilts like these.<br />

I worked on some other pieces and parts of quilts that I hope to finish in the future. It was a fun weekend with my friend Vicky. We even had time to visit the local quilt store which gave us 20% off on our purchases. I was on the hunt for 30's repro fabrics to make a Lori Holt quilt. I am accumulating quite a variety. The good news is I won a $20 gift certificate to the local store which I was able to use right away. Yea!!<br />

Since I returned from the retreat, I have been busy sewing away to finish the work I started while at camp. Having a goal has really gotten me going. <br />

This is cranberry harvesting season in Wisconsin. There is an area in central Wisconsin where 60% of the US cranberry crop is grown. We learned all kinds of interesting facts about cranberries. Like what, you might ask. Like there are only 5 states that grow cranberries. Washington, Oregon, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Wisconsin. Cranberries are a native plant and are grown from transplants, not seeds. Cranberries have more vitamin C than oranges and are the highest fruits in antioxidants.<br />
<br />
So we drove halfway across the state (2 1/2 hours) to Pittsville High School to take a tour. This high school offers to only class in Cranberry Science in the US and the students conduct the tours as part of their class. We first watched a video and then got on a school bus to drive to a local cranberry marsh. (They didn't call them bogs.) The students took the bus with us and using a megaphone, told us all about cranberry farming and processing. They were really very knowledgable of the whole thing and many worked at one of the facilities. <br />
<br />
Here are a few photos of the marsh area and the cranberries being harvested.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The plants grow only about 6" tall. All the berries in the foreground are waste berries that have fallen off of trucks. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is called support land where water is stored in a reservoir.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The field is flooded when it is time to harvest. The berries are raked loose with a harrow on a tractor and then they float to the surface. They are gathered with a boom, a large flexible strap or hose that corrals them.</div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
More berries being corralled. The white berries are separated out for white cranberry juice. (It doesn't stain kids' clothes.)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Berries are pumped from the field. Debris and water go in the dump truck. Berries go up the conveyor on the left.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Dirt and waste into the dump truck.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Gazillions of berries into a semi.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then we went to a processing plant where the berries are cleaned, tested, and put in large wooden bins totaling 1300# of berries.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-urANWdeRnG0/W8H5lRRBjhI/AAAAAAAAEOk/Pjz73_fZ_3MgbpsZQ5gRX920jj2Ev0jngCLcBGAs/s1600/PA110103.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-urANWdeRnG0/W8H5lRRBjhI/AAAAAAAAEOk/Pjz73_fZ_3MgbpsZQ5gRX920jj2Ev0jngCLcBGAs/s320/PA110103.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The semis dump the berries into a large vat about 8 feet deep that is outdoors.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They are washed and screened several times for debris.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NrL3VdfI9qE/W8H5p0MVkcI/AAAAAAAAEOo/XGjxtA4j3B03IK_9eOGOsnBFKMUcUifsQCLcBGAs/s1600/PA110106.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NrL3VdfI9qE/W8H5p0MVkcI/AAAAAAAAEOo/XGjxtA4j3B03IK_9eOGOsnBFKMUcUifsQCLcBGAs/s320/PA110106.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The berries are then loaded and weighed in the wooden bins.</div>
<span style="text-align: center;">The bins are either sent to a facility down the road to be made into juice or dried cranberries ...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
or they are stacked 9 high and put in cold storage (-10 degrees) until needed. It was only 32 outside yesterday, but WOW was it cold in that freezer!! The students said it is great fun to come in the freezer in summer and lob frozen berries at each other. </div>
<br />
<br />
After the tour we returned to the school for lunch. We were served Wisconsin cheese soup (we are the dairy state, after all), a pulled pork sandwich with cranberry horseradish sauce, yummy, and vanilla ice cream with cranberry sauce.<br />
<br />
This was the placemat we had for our lunch. I got such a hoot out of reading all the ads and especially the cheer at the top of the mat. It was so big I couldn't get it all in one scan on my printer.<br />

Well, this was our third winter in the same town and we have seen most all the sights there, although we are always surprised when something new pops up. There are loads of parks and we have hiked the trails of all of them. This year we were next to the ocean so we spent a lot of time walking the beach, watching the waves, picking up shells. The usual stuff.<br />
<br />
We spent a lot of nights playing trivia in a couple of different restaurants or bars. Every time we or our friends had company we tried to work in a game of trivia. We must have been getting pretty good at it as we won gift cards to the restaurant where we were playing, which meant another return visit the next week to play again. Twice we took first prize.<br />
<br />
The highlight of my trip was taking a class from Bonnie Hunter through the local guild. I was so excited to be able to join them and work on the Talkin' Turkey block. Bonnie is such a friendly and fun person. I didn't know any of the other people, but met a few and they were very welcoming. After the workshop, Bonnie did a trunk show which was fun too.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The first time we pulled into the garage of the house we rented this year, I immediately spied a plastic table folded up and stored against the garage wall. I knew right away this was the table I could use to set up my sewing machine in the house. There was a 3rd bedroom that was used as an office and a wall under a window with just the right space for the table and all my stuff. I sewed nearly everyday we were there, sometimes for just a few minutes and other days for several hours. Here are some of the things I was working on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BhjNyZjlIKk/Wtc1acj1KtI/AAAAAAAAELo/jcNJXZd_1o0Vc5BHH-aJaqirFct2SyOuACLcBGAs/s1600/fullsizeoutput_174b.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BhjNyZjlIKk/Wtc1acj1KtI/AAAAAAAAELo/jcNJXZd_1o0Vc5BHH-aJaqirFct2SyOuACLcBGAs/s320/fullsizeoutput_174b.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I made this quilt top for my great niece who has a birthday coming up in May. She will be 11.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The pink fabric in the center of the square is elephants being carried by hot air balloons. So funny.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
What grabbed me was this adorable fabric of girls carrying pink parasols while riding unicycles. My little niece performs in a unicycle/ gymnastics group called Young Ambassadors. They are ambassadors for physical fitness and perform at the half time of basketball games or at special assemblies at all the elementary and high schools and even college games in their town. How perfect!!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I made these two little doll quilts for the granddaughters of my friend in Florida. Her granddaughters live in Ecuador. She had quilts made for them and I made these to go with them.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I have been making a bunch of these for a Goose Chase quilt. I made quite a few in Florida and just keep going.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I made this fancy carrying case to put my Talkin' Turkey blocks in to bring them home. I didn't want them to get all wrinkly after I spent time ironing and squaring them.</div>

Are you sick of them yet? I can always look at picture of quilts. So much easier than making them. LOL.<br />

This quilt, called the Arc, is a picture of an arc welder looking down from above. You can see the welder's glove in the center holding a metal rod. The head and mask are in the top left corner.</div>

This quilt is by Marilyn Badger, one of my favorite quilters. It did not win any awards, which is unbelievable. Lots of beautiful threadwork, embroidery, paper piecing, beading, etc. etc.<br />

Such a cute quilt. The maker reproduced old patterns. First she recreated the patterns by appliqueing the dresses on the white background. Then she xeroxed the original patterns onto fabric and appliqued each one in the bottom right corner. So clever!! The quilt name is Memories are Made of This.<br />

I am always looking for ideas, although honestly I will likely never make a quilt like the ones I see. They are so lovely to look at, but I don't have the talent or patience or need for such an elaborate quilt. That makes going to the shows all the more enjoyable -- kind of like going to an art museum.<br />
<br />
Here are more of the wonderful works I saw in Daytona.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dfcCccaslrg/WskXBNH4fQI/AAAAAAAAEGs/gpzxgayRf4oZrARyMoGr3v9Cel-AD1cUACLcBGAs/s1600/P2280146.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dfcCccaslrg/WskXBNH4fQI/AAAAAAAAEGs/gpzxgayRf4oZrARyMoGr3v9Cel-AD1cUACLcBGAs/s320/P2280146.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I believe this won Best of Show.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xj_qN9r8XBU/WskXBLkjYvI/AAAAAAAAEGw/WfJC1hr5iQsxxri4KaV7Djp1496Wf_gGACLcBGAs/s1600/P2280148.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xj_qN9r8XBU/WskXBLkjYvI/AAAAAAAAEGw/WfJC1hr5iQsxxri4KaV7Djp1496Wf_gGACLcBGAs/s320/P2280148.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8DUG9CFI4c4/WskXBUOuvHI/AAAAAAAAEG0/OewVb738qMgIvpnzj4O-cbupGiMszwCPQCLcBGAs/s1600/P2280150.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8DUG9CFI4c4/WskXBUOuvHI/AAAAAAAAEG0/OewVb738qMgIvpnzj4O-cbupGiMszwCPQCLcBGAs/s320/P2280150.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Edge detail. Loads of beading on the entire quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IyT5MJbzaGg/WskXIIY_meI/AAAAAAAAEG4/F6nyRgP-r541y_XE2e7VbpygGkPhx5XIQCLcBGAs/s1600/P2280151.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IyT5MJbzaGg/WskXIIY_meI/AAAAAAAAEG4/F6nyRgP-r541y_XE2e7VbpygGkPhx5XIQCLcBGAs/s320/P2280151.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The beading was done like cutwork. The black behind the beads is the curtain fabric, not the quilt.</div>

<br />
I enjoyed life in Florida this winter. It was definitely warmer than Wisconsin. We visited the local parks, did some sightseeing, and spent time with our friends. This was our third winter in Florida and for the first time, I brought my sewing machine and lots of supplies and fabric!<br />
<br />
In January, I was able to join in a Bonnie Hunter workshop that was hosted by the Racing Fingers guild of Ormond Beach. They were very welcoming and Bonnie was a very enthusiastic teacher. It all went so fast, I could hardly believe it was over at the end of the day. I had dinner with a couple of guild members and returned in the evening for Bonnie's trunk show in the evening. It was so fun to see so many of her quilts in person. Thank you, Bonnie and the Racing Fingers Guild for such a fun day. We worked on making Bonnie's Talking Turkey design. I managed to complete 12 of the blocks after the class. I plan to use them in a quilt for a returning soldier.<br />
<br />
In February, AQS held its 3rd annual show in Daytona. I enjoy this show so much as it improves every year and provides lots of inspiration. Most of the quilts seem far beyond my skill range, but they are fun to see and I love to try and figure out how they were made. I have lots of photos to share.<br />
<br />
It's nice to be back home, but we had snow last night on top of the 8 inches that fell the day before we came home. As my husband keeps saying, "Why do we live here?"<br />

It is so darned cute!! The next step is to embroider the white stripes between the rows. The pattern says to add the batting, but not the backing and embroider through that. This will be a new experience for me. <br />

I love the little touches of pink and limey green that add some zip to the color scheme. This is a pattern from <a href="http://jendalyquilts.blogspot.com/2016/12/merry-and-bright-day-12.html">Jen Daly Quilts</a>. </div>

<br />
I think my shopping and wrapping and mailing packages are at an end for this year. Christmas cards and letters are next. My list seems to get shorter each year as more people lose interest in sending cards and distance and time seem to drift us apart. <br />
<br />
Our daughter is in Saudi Arabia this year and we will spend a day with our son and daughter-in-law to exchange gifts after Christmas. We also plan to visit friends in my hometown in Indiana after Christmas. Looking forward to some new traditions and time with loved ones.<br />
<br />
Merry Christmas to all. <br />

Jen has some very sweet designs and has offered a mystery quilt-along the last 3 Christmases. Her latest one just started this past week. The good news is they are relatively simple, small and easy to fit into a busy holiday schedule. I am making last year's mystery quilt right now, although it is not such a mystery to me as I have seen the finished quilt and I Love It. Here are some of the pieces I have finished.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have one more bunch of blocks to make this weekend and then it is time to assemble. Much of this is done with paper piecing and goes very quickly. Jen has provided all the cutting instructions and made the pieces that are paper pieced slightly oversized so there are no mistakes and the whole thing goes together easily. I am loving it. It is fun to work with Christmas fabrics once a year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lots more to do to get ready for the holiday, but we are enjoying the season so much. Our first snowfall of the winter happened last night. So we may just have a white Christmas.</div>

Our local shops recently had a shop hop. I only hopped to one shop to buy fabric for an upcoming quilt retreat. The shop gave out a free pattern for an apple potholder. I couldn't wait to make one and even woke up in the middle of the night thinking blue and yellow. So the next morning I got busy and made this fun little apple. Cute Christmas presents, I think.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is paper pieced and oh, so easy.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This past weekend I spent 2 ½ days with 63 of our guild members at a resort about 15 - 20 miles from my house. We sew our own projects and also have a donation project we work on. This time we made pillowcases for the pediatrics ward at one of the local hospitals. We managed to complete 197 plus many more that were donated by members who were not at the guild. I used some Cat in the Hat fabric and some Mario Brothers. This is the only scrap I had left and I forgot to take a picture of the finished cases. Oh well. I got 5 done and was happy to move onto my next project. <br />
<br /></div>

I also made a Soldier Quilt. We make these for a group in Plymouth, WI that distributes them to returning service members once they have completed their service to the armed forces. I saw a photo on Pinterest of a quilt similar to this. I constructed the center like a jelly roll race quilt. This was my first time to try it and it was really fun. I cut 2 ½" strips instead of using a jelly roll, because I needed only 17 stripes. I think it turned out great and got lots of positive remarks.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Close up of this cute fabric. I thought when I pulled it out of my stash that it said things like America the Beautiful, etc. I was a little surprised when I actually saw the words. I hope it is well received.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The organizers of the retreat always like to make up some little fun gifts for everyone who attends. This time it was a coin purse and a holder for a rotary cutter. Both cute and needed. </div>

<br />
There are also door prizes on Saturday night that are donated from the local quilt shops. I received this charm pack of Kansas Troubles fabric -- always a favorite. The shop owner was sitting at my table for dinner when the gifts were handed out. It was so nice to be able to give her a big thank you immediately as she has always done so much for our guild.<br />

<br />
I am getting ready now for a great opportunity in January. We leave for Florida after Christmas and this year I am taking my sewing machine for the first time. Why? Because Bonnie Hunter is coming to a quilt guild near me and I am all signed up for her class. I am so excited and have already been organizing in my head all the things I need to take with me. We will be making the Talkin' Turkey quilt which I think I will do in RW&B to donate. Right now I am making a million 1 ½" blocks and strips to finish a Bonnie quilt I started last year. I want to take at least the finished top with me for show & tell.<br />
<br />
Lots going on in my corner of the world right now. How about you?<br />

We changed over to fall decor at church last Wednesday night. That gave me a week to get busy and get the banners completed. One of our ladies made the banners last year. They have a fall leaf design on one side..<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tVYwXI5yv2Y/WdIv6W82xuI/AAAAAAAAECw/uXTrT9NNYN00r8aoUZzl2yA7KcUYUwgNgCLcBGAs/s1600/fullsizeoutput_171b.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1518" data-original-width="1600" height="303" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tVYwXI5yv2Y/WdIv6W82xuI/AAAAAAAAECw/uXTrT9NNYN00r8aoUZzl2yA7KcUYUwgNgCLcBGAs/s320/fullsizeoutput_171b.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and solid fabric on the reverse. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Tn1Kawh6Es/WdIv290jZmI/AAAAAAAAECo/svU-_qxmaLU5Pbt-GRj57pDOJNKPL4THQCLcBGAs/s1600/fullsizeoutput_171a.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1535" data-original-width="1600" height="306" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Tn1Kawh6Es/WdIv290jZmI/AAAAAAAAECo/svU-_qxmaLU5Pbt-GRj57pDOJNKPL4THQCLcBGAs/s320/fullsizeoutput_171a.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She asked me to do something to the plain side. So I made ginormous leaves - one for each banner.I started by printing off simple leaf shapes from the Internet. I like using coloring book designs for easy applique and they are free. Then I copied the shapes onto transparencies, enlarged them with an overhead projector at church and traced them onto large pieces of paper. These were my patterns. </div>
<br />
I decided to make the leaves as stiff as I could so they would hang well. So I traced the patterns onto Tear Away stabilizer which was the stiffest interfacing I could find. From there I stitched veins onto the fabric<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RNln8BIMF_Q/WdIvvlHS4QI/AAAAAAAAECY/yfPSbTpmwd87Jv8_GBkUDgG9ObwsYvsVQCLcBGAs/s1600/P9230083.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RNln8BIMF_Q/WdIvvlHS4QI/AAAAAAAAECY/yfPSbTpmwd87Jv8_GBkUDgG9ObwsYvsVQCLcBGAs/s320/P9230083.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
and glued the edges of the fabric over the stabilizer so I could applique them to the banners. The process was pretty simple, but I did all the applique by hand, so that I could sew only onto one side of the banner and not have the stitches show on the backside. That was the time consuming part. I managed to come up with 5 different designs and fabrics and got them done in the week's time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GyYQm9XGlGE/WdIv6X3Y-XI/AAAAAAAAECs/8Ph9M1llnHkzAE3tT61FaugpncXmtjK7wCLcBGAs/s1600/fullsizeoutput_171c.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1454" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GyYQm9XGlGE/WdIv6X3Y-XI/AAAAAAAAECs/8Ph9M1llnHkzAE3tT61FaugpncXmtjK7wCLcBGAs/s320/fullsizeoutput_171c.jpeg" width="290" /></a></div>

They are now hanging in the church and look pretty good. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I crosshatched a portion of the center and then dabbed on gold paint so it didn't look like a giant brown spot staring at you.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I also finished my mystery quilt from Kathleen Tracy's blog. It finished at 30 x 30, so I am thinking I will hang it on the guest room wall. <br />

This is the show that is put on by Nancy Zieman and the Sewing with Nancy show as a fundraiser for Wisconsin Public Television. At the entry there was a table full of post-its available to write a note to Nancy. What a nice idea! She has been the driver behind this show since its inception and she is usually buzzing around and often stops to talk with people and sign autographs or take photos. She was missed yesterday. <br />
<br />
The quilts as usual were very beautiful and varied from some simple to the very complex. The best of show was won by Claudia Clark Meyers and Marilyn Badger. They are such a phenomenal duo. Two quilters from the guild in Green Bay had quilts in the show. One even won a red ribbon and cash prize. <br />
<br />
I took a few photos to share. I also found a few things that made their way home with me. I had 3 friends with me and my ears were ringing when I got home from all the constant chatter. What a fun day!<br />

This quilt is a game that quizzes you on the states. It includes the capitals, flags, birds, mottos, flowers, and other factoids. It is quilted as a maze with the start point at the tip of Washington. The border has all the state flowers, flags and birds. All the answers to the quiz are printed upside down below the map. So fun and such a great teaching tool. </div>

No posting means no work done by me. I wish I had a good excuse, but I keep telling myself I need to get back to sewing. I finished this little piece yesterday. I took a class from Linda Poole to learn how to use Inktense pencils and we made this bird picture. Sort of like coloring in a coloring book. The class was in Feb of 2016. That was a long time ago. I finished the coloring after the class in March of 2016. I got it layered and quilted in April or May of 2016 and then it sat while I looked for a binding material. I finally found this batik last week and now it is done. Yea!<br />

I completed piecing and assembling the mystery quilt from Kathleen Tracy's Small Quilts group. It was fun, but ended up being 30+" square. That's bigger than most of my small quilts and I will have to find a place to display it. I marked it to quilt with a Frixion pen and hope it will come out when I am done. <br />

A friend brought me a bag of beets. Four beets to be exact.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3ZLd3RzWNx4/WaSMpPJc2sI/AAAAAAAAEAA/ZRMDzyJGglYH47v6koKzv4JY7FB0Ekg7wCEwYBhgL/s1600/P8150042.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3ZLd3RzWNx4/WaSMpPJc2sI/AAAAAAAAEAA/ZRMDzyJGglYH47v6koKzv4JY7FB0Ekg7wCEwYBhgL/s320/P8150042.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Each was bigger than a softball. I had to parboil them for an hour in two batches as my biggest pot would only hold two at a time. Then into the freezer they went. It took me about 3 hours to accomplish all this. Good thing I love beets.<br />
<br />
I am linking to Small Quilts and Doll Quilts today.<br />

She was the guest speaker at our guild and then followed up with a class using her patterns. She brought 4 different patterns for us to choose from and kits that we could purchase if we wanted. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RbNe0Qnbxp0/WW-FOY5PsPI/AAAAAAAAD_U/RTtL9NuhocABmPT0pLuERk29Cow40XsWwCLcBGAs/s1600/P7180368.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RbNe0Qnbxp0/WW-FOY5PsPI/AAAAAAAAD_U/RTtL9NuhocABmPT0pLuERk29Cow40XsWwCLcBGAs/s320/P7180368.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the pattern that I chose. </div>
<br />
First we copied this large paper pattern onto freezer paper and then onto muslin. All the pattern pieces were labeled alphabetically as well as all the pieces of fabric in the kit so we couldn't mess it up. She really put a lot of effort into making it as easy as possible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-85lFUcV7xpQ/WW-FOYU8shI/AAAAAAAAD_Y/T_uhr2qrf-IiPp7RwcxQUC7VjUyO4vgPACLcBGAs/s1600/P7180369.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-85lFUcV7xpQ/WW-FOYU8shI/AAAAAAAAD_Y/T_uhr2qrf-IiPp7RwcxQUC7VjUyO4vgPACLcBGAs/s320/P7180369.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Then we cut the freezer paper pieces apart and ironed them onto the fabric and then cut out the fabric and laid it onto the muslin. There were some paper piecing parts on each pattern which were fun to do. She has a different technique for paper piecing that I enjoyed learning. Unfortunately her technique does not really translate to other paper piecing patterns. <br />
<br />
Once all the pieces are laid out on the muslin and pinned down, we zigzagged all the overlapping pieces right on top. No fusing or glue required.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pJ663i7A5RA/WW-FNXePTBI/AAAAAAAAD_Q/glLl_24ULt4vbZ07dyn4tknf8O_z0nhSACLcBGAs/s1600/P7180366.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pJ663i7A5RA/WW-FNXePTBI/AAAAAAAAD_Q/glLl_24ULt4vbZ07dyn4tknf8O_z0nhSACLcBGAs/s320/P7180366.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The next step is to make bias tape or bias strips that will be used to cover all the zigzag up. The strips are sewn down with a top stitch along the edges (or you can use a decorative stitch.) This is done after sandwiching the batting, the backing, and the top. So when you top stitch the bias tape, you are actually quilting. You can add other quilting in the open areas as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cCh_4_jSz0s/WW-FGsbKB1I/AAAAAAAAD_E/TC_ou-AZocokW-MaCLfysjZBeB5ohbWKACLcBGAs/s1600/P7180365.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cCh_4_jSz0s/WW-FGsbKB1I/AAAAAAAAD_E/TC_ou-AZocokW-MaCLfysjZBeB5ohbWKACLcBGAs/s320/P7180365.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here I am auditioning the different colors of bias tape.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I have sandwiched my little quilt and am ready to apply the bias tape. We made our own bias tape from bias strips she provided in the kit. Her method is to put a pin in the ironing board cover with a gap as wide as the finished tape. <br />

<br />
You push the pointed end of the bias strip under the pin and then pull the strip to the left gently manipulating it before it goes under the pin. It folds automatically. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I didn't think to take a photo before I made the tape, so this is already folded and ironed, but I tried to open it up to illustrate the point.</div>
<br />
She taught us to set the iron flat on the tape as it comes out of the pin and Voila! you have bias tape. I thought I would not be able to do it, so I bought a bias tape maker for that size at Joann and found it was more putzy than using the pin method.<br />

I love a busy week and this is one of those. Most of my weeks are pretty tame, so when it rains it always pours around here. Lots of activities and never enough time. Then the rush is over in a few days and it's back to the normal humdrum. I love a busy week once in awhile. It makes life more interesting and helps keep me organized and on my toes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided last week to take on some of my projects that have been hanging on forever. My sofa in my sewing area has looked like this for many months. Projects that just need to be bound or just need to be quilted or a top waiting to be sandwiched or lots of pieces waiting to be assembled. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mADnMN7PO4E/WVEHvR1Wc7I/AAAAAAAAD-A/8kTLbiJE9Lg15tpzQh0b0C-S6dCXFhYUQCLcBGAs/s1600/fullsizeoutput_16e4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="838" data-original-width="1600" height="167" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mADnMN7PO4E/WVEHvR1Wc7I/AAAAAAAAD-A/8kTLbiJE9Lg15tpzQh0b0C-S6dCXFhYUQCLcBGAs/s320/fullsizeoutput_16e4.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I started with this patriotic one. It needed to be quilted and bound. I did the straight line quilting weeks ago and then stalled. I decided to put some wavy lines on the bars, but couldn't figure out how to make a template and I couldn't find one in my collection of templates. I tried folding paper and drawing a wavy line, but that didn't work. Did I mention I can't draw? I finally asked my husband who said, "It sounds like you need a sine wave." Is that the wiggly line they show on those machines that check your heart beat? Close enough.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4b9m1EsqrXk/WVEHwGgyA4I/AAAAAAAAD-I/0X09BGLwVOI_ebkJMgSBGZbDnwqxtV9cwCLcBGAs/s1600/fullsizeoutput_16e5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1448" data-original-width="1600" height="289" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4b9m1EsqrXk/WVEHwGgyA4I/AAAAAAAAD-I/0X09BGLwVOI_ebkJMgSBGZbDnwqxtV9cwCLcBGAs/s320/fullsizeoutput_16e5.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
If you are in need of a wavy line, he showed me how to make one using the program Grapher which is on Apple computers. When you get the program up on your computer screen, it prompts you with an equation. It starts with "y=". He added .2 sin 5x. So the equation looks like this<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
y= .2 sin 5x</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once you enter this equation, the program graphs a nice wavy line. You can change the wave by changing the two numbers. That will make the waves taller or shorter and make more or less of them. Once I found a pattern I liked, I printed out the graph with the wavy line. I traced it onto freezer paper and used that for my quilting template. It was so easy. I know I will use Grapher again.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5mi8S_fX9-s/WVEHvjf-VUI/AAAAAAAAD-E/-ZxT-bReTSEf-sDbK2nLbkxrNFAGpQA-wCLcBGAs/s1600/fullsizeoutput_16e6.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1506" data-original-width="1600" height="301" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5mi8S_fX9-s/WVEHvjf-VUI/AAAAAAAAD-E/-ZxT-bReTSEf-sDbK2nLbkxrNFAGpQA-wCLcBGAs/s320/fullsizeoutput_16e6.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the back. Just using up some scraps.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next up was this little Spool or Hourglass quilt. It is pretty small, but cute. I had it quilted in less than 30 minutes and bound in about an hour.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B42OVcjCk2I/WVEHy1jgt2I/AAAAAAAAD-M/uOC9NV8j0acW54_Tly4nI2tDEif8TqbbwCLcBGAs/s1600/fullsizeoutput_16e7.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1268" data-original-width="1600" height="253" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B42OVcjCk2I/WVEHy1jgt2I/AAAAAAAAD-M/uOC9NV8j0acW54_Tly4nI2tDEif8TqbbwCLcBGAs/s320/fullsizeoutput_16e7.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My friend, Barb gave me this beautiful needlepunch piece for Christmas. It was also on the sofa pile. I finished off the back of it and then went frame hunting.</div>

I found a gold mat in the framing department and had it cut to size. Using double sided tape, I put the mat in the opening of the frame and stuck the finished piece on the mat with the same tape.</div>

That was a month ago. Where has time gone? Anyway, it is a pattern from Buttermilk Basin. The design is very cute, but the pattern was a little sketchy. Glad to be done with it and have it sitting on display in my family room. Using it as a table mat.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I sewed around it versus tracing. I peeled it off and then used it again under the tree.</div>

Her pattern line and quilt shop are called Sew Many Pieces. What a perfect name! She brought lots of quilts to share from her earliest work to her most current. Each quilt was constructed with smaller and smaller pieces. She went from quilts with 2000 pieces to quilts with 8000 pieces. She is currently working on a pineapple quilt that she hopes to land in the Guiness World Record Book for most pieces.<br />
<br />
I bought two of her patterns. The first is called X's and O's. The pieces are cut 1" and sewn into blocks of 81 pieces. It does kind of look like a checkerboard. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G7ZlKegoPsY/WRYJAXv9UoI/AAAAAAAAD8o/-9eRZsgHRQ8W_la8OKVvvUWF1ms9GVZrQCLcB/s1600/P5120337.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G7ZlKegoPsY/WRYJAXv9UoI/AAAAAAAAD8o/-9eRZsgHRQ8W_la8OKVvvUWF1ms9GVZrQCLcB/s320/P5120337.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The other pattern is the pineapple block she is using for her world record quilt. The blocks finish at 2 inches and have 45 pieces per block. I don't plan to challenge her record breaking quilt, but thought I would see if I could actually piece a block that small. Mickey's plan is to make a king size quilt of these little 2" blocks! Yikes!<br />
<br />
My favorite quilt shop here in town closed recently and the owner sent a basket of patterns to our meeting that she is closing out at $1.00 each. I really didn't need any more patterns, but these were so cute I could not pass them up. One is needle punch.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c8dW8G5b0ic/WRYJF2YPZMI/AAAAAAAAD8w/0Vx4zQ5xCUU2ikZG9H0AXppi0CqywjyXACLcB/s1600/P5120339.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c8dW8G5b0ic/WRYJF2YPZMI/AAAAAAAAD8w/0Vx4zQ5xCUU2ikZG9H0AXppi0CqywjyXACLcB/s320/P5120339.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
One is two cute table runners from Buttermilk Basin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tgl6JnwzHQo/WRYJHLaPwOI/AAAAAAAAD80/hCRxE0dljaYYUvXbNlEfcf77eBI412g0wCLcB/s1600/P5120340.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tgl6JnwzHQo/WRYJHLaPwOI/AAAAAAAAD80/hCRxE0dljaYYUvXbNlEfcf77eBI412g0wCLcB/s320/P5120340.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The other two are Lori Smith patterns. I just love her work.<br />

Have a fun Mother's Day. I spent the winter in Florida again enjoying the wonderful weather and did not sew a stitch. Our daughter travelled with us to see where we are staying and do a little sight seeing and then she flew off to Turkey once again.<br />
<br />
We returned home 2 weeks ago and so far have been cleaning inside and out, vacuuming up lady bugs in the house and raking up leaves and debris from the yard. I committed myself to sewing 5 hours last week and managed to get all the steps done for Kathleen Tracy's mystery quilt. It's always fun to find a new project! <br />

This weekend our son is getting married and so this week we are getting organized for the big event. We are fortunate that he found someone so special and they are starting off their life together in a beautiful setting with family and friends to share in the day. Can't wait! <br />
<br />
I made it to the Daytona Quilt Show which was a treat. I ran into two people from my local quilt guild here in Wisconsin. How does that happen? I even managed to take a few photos to share.<br />

Our trip home included a stop at Kitty Hawk and then Washington, D.C. I had not seen the WWII memorial and somehow in many trips there had never visited the Jefferson Memorial, so those were our first two stops and then we spent the afternoon at the American History Museum. I was hoping to see some quilts, but there were only one or two on display as part of other exhibits. We also spent a half day at the new Air and Space exhibit at Dulles Airport. It is huge. </div>

Hope you are all enjoying the beginnings of spring. We have a few daffodils and hyacinths popping open here. It feels so good to see everything turning green!!<br />

We had all of our shopping and wrapping done by then so we could celebrate early with him. His fiancee had a last minute work problem that kept her home, so we didn't get a chance to see her, but we are travelling to see them tomorrow so all is well.<br />
<br />
Since the rush was over a week ago, we relaxed and enjoyed a really fun week. We went to the movies - TWICE! That never happens. We attended some group gatherings with friends and a retirement party for a former co-worker which meant I got to see lots of people that I hadn't seen in years. We went to the early service on Christmas Eve which is planned to be children inclusive and it was so sweet. I got to see lots of visiting grandchildren and families. The church glowed with soft lights and candles and the message was perfect like God's love. <br />
<br />
I also got to sew this week with out feeling rushed. I finished the top for the Florida quilt I started in May. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CBpdgC0aAeI/WGEZyvTXOCI/AAAAAAAAD5U/B3mTjHvM9mwD6VfJfER9ol0OivgeVzJEwCLcB/s1600/fullsizeoutput_1689.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CBpdgC0aAeI/WGEZyvTXOCI/AAAAAAAAD5U/B3mTjHvM9mwD6VfJfER9ol0OivgeVzJEwCLcB/s320/fullsizeoutput_1689.jpeg" width="259" /></a></div>
I wish you could see how cute this border fabric is in person. It photographs as tan, but it is really a buttery yellow background.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sPVuPjeFBOo/WGEZOv51jUI/AAAAAAAAD5A/9PHqzdFfGtUvZ_X45e55jPWMKirQDM0JwCLcB/s1600/PC240149.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sPVuPjeFBOo/WGEZOv51jUI/AAAAAAAAD5A/9PHqzdFfGtUvZ_X45e55jPWMKirQDM0JwCLcB/s320/PC240149.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Love the color bar in the selvage, too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bs__8_UvRR0/WGEZNIXHSYI/AAAAAAAAD48/UT4BAJjVYSsibTZQ_kYtl6lQVl81_RWMgCLcB/s1600/PC240151.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bs__8_UvRR0/WGEZNIXHSYI/AAAAAAAAD48/UT4BAJjVYSsibTZQ_kYtl6lQVl81_RWMgCLcB/s320/PC240151.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I also made a single block for a quilt from Kathleen Tracy's Civil War Quilt book. I love her color sense.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Yk3EFixjzWk/WGEZ0QBsxPI/AAAAAAAAD5Y/4DTf0lOHwm4Cb95KSNgMQXKnE6Hg4tP4QCLcB/s1600/fullsizeoutput_168a.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="302" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Yk3EFixjzWk/WGEZ0QBsxPI/AAAAAAAAD5Y/4DTf0lOHwm4Cb95KSNgMQXKnE6Hg4tP4QCLcB/s320/fullsizeoutput_168a.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I received this beautiful punch needle piece from my friend, Barb. She is the queen of punch needle We always tease her because the backs of her pieces are as perfect as the front. She quilts this way too. No ravellings or hanging threads for Barb! LOL!<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
A church friend gave me this little piece. It is so cute and it glows in the dark!!</div>

I'm sure it's the same for everyone. Seems like I always think I can get more done than I actually accomplish, including making gifts for others. Our daughter is still here with us for a couple more weeks and our son came home for the weekend, so we celebrated Christmas early with just the 4 of us. Our son's fiancee was unable to join us as she had work duties that kept her home. Luckily we will see them again right after Christmas. <br />
<br />
Here's what I have been working on. Another stocking for our mantel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O5hA7UlhOHs/WFfZQ4LpknI/AAAAAAAAD4Q/nt67oYN00qkIMotnGgOIEAszEk9z_zbvACLcB/s1600/fullsizeoutput_1685.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O5hA7UlhOHs/WFfZQ4LpknI/AAAAAAAAD4Q/nt67oYN00qkIMotnGgOIEAszEk9z_zbvACLcB/s320/fullsizeoutput_1685.jpeg" width="290" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9ME71xIlpB4/WFfZdF3BO8I/AAAAAAAAD4Y/L9TzAACQpc4FTfMLKNu53W311Gcib7FXgCLcB/s1600/PC150138.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9ME71xIlpB4/WFfZdF3BO8I/AAAAAAAAD4Y/L9TzAACQpc4FTfMLKNu53W311Gcib7FXgCLcB/s320/PC150138.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UBskkKAzRZ8/WFfZceoNTZI/AAAAAAAAD4U/Dk3NasTeBDYmdpSs2dQljRuRL1nLg-DiQCLcB/s1600/PC150139.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UBskkKAzRZ8/WFfZceoNTZI/AAAAAAAAD4U/Dk3NasTeBDYmdpSs2dQljRuRL1nLg-DiQCLcB/s320/PC150139.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The house I grew up in did not have a fireplace. It had a brick chimney like you see on the rooftop of every house that Santa ever landed on with his sleigh and reindeer. As a child, I simply could not fathom that we had a chimney, but no fireplace. How would Santa get in? I remember scouring the house trying to locate the fireplace that went with that chimney to no avail. As an adult, I swore I would have a fireplace someday. My first house had no fireplace, so I had one put in. When we built the house we are in now, we made the fireplace a focal point in our family room. There is something special about a nice cozy fire, especially at Christmas time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IVS7JaGkki8/WFfZrXlVdTI/AAAAAAAAD4g/EnIOGm84WW4WPZrn7y3axtkEKoFzfXNmwCLcB/s1600/PC150142.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IVS7JaGkki8/WFfZrXlVdTI/AAAAAAAAD4g/EnIOGm84WW4WPZrn7y3axtkEKoFzfXNmwCLcB/s320/PC150142.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The cardinal stocking is from a pattern designed by Erin Russek of One Piece at a Time. The other stocking I made when our daughter was a baby. I started a stocking for our son when he was a babe, but it is still not done. LOL. <br />
<br />
I also made a snowman quilt for a friend. It had to be done last week so I could ship it to her in time for Christmas. Nothing like a deadline to keep me hopping.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dOTm6xUb01c/WFfZqKMlgqI/AAAAAAAAD4c/vPoRI2H4jo4idKPx1jL5mbRcL-__aZCoQCLcB/s1600/fullsizeoutput_1686.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="304" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dOTm6xUb01c/WFfZqKMlgqI/AAAAAAAAD4c/vPoRI2H4jo4idKPx1jL5mbRcL-__aZCoQCLcB/s320/fullsizeoutput_1686.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I love the lanterns that have become popular the last year or two, so I hopped over to Hobby Lobby a few weeks ago when they were on sale and found one I liked. I love to comb over the photos on Pinterest and found a tutorial for making a lantern swag. Back to Hobby Lobby I went for floral picks and ribbon and whipped up the decoration for my lantern. It is bright and cheery. It's also so big, you can barely see the lantern. LOL! I filled the bottom of the lantern with leftover ornaments. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We had lots of snow this weekend, like most of the upper midwest. It is so nice to have a White Christmas. That is one plus of living in Wisconsin. It is pretty well guaranteed every year.<br />
<br />
Blessings on you and yours for the Christmas season.<br />

I love getting ready for the holidays. I made two little ornaments for a church craft sale that is comng up next weekend. If I have time, I will make a mug rug or two.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
I am also working on a stocking for the mantel. I have not hand appliqued for awhile and I could really tell. I think by the 5th leaf I made some adjustments and they are turning out a bit better. Maybe by next Monday I will have this done and hanging.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Oh, yes. Our sweet daughter came home late last night after two days of flying. She has been in Turkey for the last two years working and we are so happy to have her home. Two years is a long time to not see your child in person. Today we celebrate her birthday!<br />

I always enjoy finding out what others are making and look for inspiration to get me to the sewing machine. I think my blogging is definitely a function of the amount that I sew. No sew = no blog. <br />
<br />
I did get this little quilt finished last week. I always struggle with the quilting of every piece. So I basically followed the designer's lead. I looked at her finished piece on the pattern and tried to emulate it. I started this piece in a class from Gail Garber in October.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: center;">Gail had a box of ceramic buttons that a friend of hers made. Gail carries the box with her and sells these fun buttons for her friend. They are such a fun accent.</span></div>

I think the little house needs something over the door. Maybe a tiny wreath. I have a circle attachment for my machine, but I don't know if it will go that small - 1" dia. </div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The objective of the class was to learn how to piece flying geese and other objects like the tree in a curved shape and how to sew them to the background. Mine turned out pretty well, but sewing that curve over the point of the tree was a little tricky.</div>

I like how it turned out. There were a few errors in the pattern which didn't help matters, but I made it thru. Looking forward to getting it quilted and on the wall.<br />

<br />~Kris~http://www.blogger.com/profile/04759188532950593072noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752403547949788594.post-43397302258139911102016-10-24T05:58:00.001-07:002016-10-24T06:00:22.784-07:00A Fun ClassI had the chance to take a fun class last week through our guild. The teacher was Gail Garber. I didn't know who she was, but I have seen her work and was glad I got the chance to meet her and learn some new skills. The quilt I recognized immediately has been used in Bernina print ads for the last several years. Here is a <a href="http://gailgarber.com/gallery/gails-quilts/bernina-beyond-borders/">link</a> if you are interested. I am sure you will recognize it too. You can see her other work at the link too.<br />
<br />
Anyway, we learned how to do curved paper piecing and join it to other curved pieces. We started by making this tree.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZHwrlyznS6I/WA4BVnWf0eI/AAAAAAAAD2M/gTzuoGJO2sUkX-TAzFuMu1pCK3j9aYueACLcB/s1600/fullsizeoutput_167c.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZHwrlyznS6I/WA4BVnWf0eI/AAAAAAAAD2M/gTzuoGJO2sUkX-TAzFuMu1pCK3j9aYueACLcB/s320/fullsizeoutput_167c.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Then we spent the afternoon learning to draft other curved pieces using a flexible curve. Here is a sampler quilt that Gail made that shows lots of possibilities. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LR1pxk0qS5g/WA4Ap0-d-SI/AAAAAAAAD18/kFXTQOw8YtgKAr6e_EzL5psJh1TGQgE7gCLcB/s1600/PA120116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LR1pxk0qS5g/WA4Ap0-d-SI/AAAAAAAAD18/kFXTQOw8YtgKAr6e_EzL5psJh1TGQgE7gCLcB/s320/PA120116.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
We purchased a pattern for the class and since then I have made two more parts. One is a strip of flying geese and the second a house. Maybe by next week I will have it all put together.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This was definitely a class I enjoyed and I hope I can take these skills forward and make my own creation using some curved piecing.<br />
<br />
My other sewing the last couple of weeks was making 3 more pillowcases for the children's center near our church.<br />

The A/C is off and the windows are open to let in the cool air. It is soup weather for sure and I have a pot of borscht in the fridge.<br />
<br />
I whipped up this Dresden Table Topper from Luann's design at <a href="http://luannsloosethreads.blogspot.com/">Loose Threads.</a> It is going to my church for a potluck dinner. Our church quilting group is the featured topic this month and we are supplying the table decorations. The group makes pillowcases and small quilts for children who are clients of the Willowbrook center, an advocacy group for abused or neglected children.<br />

I finished the 2 Halloween quilts from last post and got them in the mail to others. Now I need to finish mine and get it on the wall.<br />

I saw this little quilt on Pinterest a couple of weeks ago and then two days later the designer and her husband had a booth at Quilt Expo in Madison. Their pattern company is called Bloomin' Minds. How cute is this little quilt?! <br />
<br />

<br />
The border fabric is from a line called Cheeky Wee Pumpkins. It has the cutest selvage.<br />
<br />

I am making 3 of them and have two quilted. I should have them finished this week and in the mail to special people. One is for my sister and one is for a friend whose birthday is on Halloween and she definitely needs this quilt. The third is mine, mine, mine, my little pretties. Oops! Got carried away there.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I have changed out all my summer quilts for my fall quilts and pulled out the Halloween decorations. Last Wednesday night, our church decor committee got our sanctuary decorated for fall, too. It is starting to look a little fallish here. The trees are just starting to turn, which is pretty late for us. My garden is still producing, so I haven't even cleaned it out yet. Can't believe it is October already.<br />
