Designing Monday

I am laying out my Threads of Memory blocks in a zig zag pattern and I need your help.  I bought this fabric that is the absolute perfect color for the setting triangles on the two inside zigzags.  I was so taken with the color that I didn't really look at the pattern.  There are little red thingies that all go the same direction.

So when I cut the setting triangles I used the tried and true technique of cutting a large square and then diagonal cutting the square twice.  This means that those little red thingies go in two different directions.  Half of the triangles go one way and the other half are at 90 degrees.

So I laid out my left zig with all the red thingies pointing up and the right zag with the red thingies going sideways to the left.  Somehow this seemed kind of odd to me.
Left zig pointing up

Right zag pointing left

So then I laid them out sort of randomly so they go in all 4 directions.

Random pattern
What do you think?  Half pointing up and half point sideways or Random?  (I am too cheap to go buy double the fabric so all the thingies point the same way.)

Stop by Judy's blog  to see more beautiful quilts.

BTW, here is the box of Honeybells I bought on Friday.  This truck comes several times a year with peaches and blueberries in summer and naval and temple oranges, grapefruit, honey bells and pecans in the winter.  All so fresh and delicious.  They send trucks all over Wisconsin, some places in Iowa and Minnesota.

  1. Hmmm... This is one of those directional prints that "reads" as random before it's cut. Like you, I don't think I would have noticed that before cutting and laying out the triangles. I'll bet most people viewing the finished quilt won't be looking as carefully at the background fabric as you are right now. I'd go with the random layout of the triangles, to make sure that if anyone DOES notice the pattern going different directions, it will look like you did it deliberately.

Now I must leave your blog immediately before I succumb to the temptation to lick my computer monitor -- those Honeybells look delicious! ;-)

  4. I agree with using the random layout. The focus is your beautiful blocks... the "filling" will hardly be noticed. When looking at your layout in the first photo, I have to force my eye to look at the background. Love it!

  5. This is a CW era quilt, right? Definitely I'd go random. I don't think they worried much about the direction of prints in that era. Random will be more authentic looking, IMHO. : )
